Don’t know which course, driver, or kart to pick for this challenge? We’ve got you covered with an easy strategy for making five opponents crash underwater quickly.

How to Cause Opponents to Crash Underwater

It’s not too difficult to complete this challenge naturally. But if you have trouble, be sure to buy an item ticket in the shop for 50 gold coins if you don’t have one handy. Doing so makes it easier to get the crash-causing items you need for the underwater segment.

You want to go with items that can’t miss, like Lightning or the homing Red Shells.

Lightning will instantly complete this challenge (assuming at least five other drivers are also in the underwater part of a level) since it hits all other drivers at the same time.

Remember you need to be in the back for the best chance to get Lightning from an item box, but you can increase your chances of pulling this rare item by using the Lightning Oilpaper or Glitter Glider.

For a more surefire approach, stay in the front row and pull your item box just before an underwater segment.

As soon as you hit the underwater section, throw as many Bananas or Red/Green shells behind you as possible. I lucked out and hit a Red Shell frenzy as the first item in Cheep Cheep Lagoon to complete the challenge immediately.

It may take more than one race, but you’ll hit 5 crashes fairly quickly using this method. AI drivers tend to run into obstacles regularly. If you manage to pull a Banana frenzy, this challenge can also be completed almost instantaneously. Dropping dozens of bananas at once virtually guarantees 4-5 crashes right away if you are in first place.

If everyone is grouped in a tight formation, a Bob-Omb or Super Horn can also potentially hit all five drivers in one go.

The table below lists the best places to complete this challenge with the most underwater segments, as well as the favored drivers to use for those courses so you get 3 items at a time.

Note that Koopa Troopa Beach has a brief underwater segment, but it’s on a side section of the course and doesn’t last long.

Course Favored Drivers
Cheep Cheep Lagoon   Baby Peach
 Rosalina
 Black Shy Guy
Cheep Cheep Lagoon R  Lemmy
 Daisy
 Red Koopa (Freerunning)
Cheep Cheep Lagoon R/RT  Koopa Troopa
 Peach (Vacation)
Cheep Cheep Lagoon T  Mario
 Luigi
 Bowser Jr.

Don’t have the drivers listed above? Here are a few alternate options that can potentially beat the challenge:

  • Lakitu  2 items per box in Cheep Cheep Lagoon
  • Larry 2 items per box in Cheep Cheep Lagoon R and R/T
  • Wendy 2 items per box in Cheep Cheep Lagoon R
  • Dry Bones 2 items per box in Cheep Cheep Lagoon R and T
