How to Build a Roof in Sons of the Forest

How to build a roof and complete your shelter in Sons of the Forest.

You’ve surely dealt with enemies climbing trees in Sons of the Forest by now, and they’ll do just the same to get into your shelter if you don’t have a roof. You don’t need a lot to make one, but you do have to put the effort toward building it. Here’s how to make a roof for the good of your base in Sons of the Forest.

The Best Way to Build a Roof in Sons of the Forest

The best, easiest way to build a roof is to construct the standard roof you see in the building manual. It’s quick to put together, and the process is essentially building a floor above you.

Building a Roof: Step-by-Step

First, gather logs if you don’t have any stored. Assuming you’ve built a floor and walls already, you’ll first want to put a log down for support in locations that are wider than one log apart. These center beams support your roof and allow you to build larger sections.

From here, building a roof in Sons of the Forest is similar to building a floor. Make the frame of four logs with support logs at the corners as needed.

Then, use planks to fill in the frame. It takes roughly five planks. Positioning the camera to place the last one can be tricky. In those cases, I just shift around until the dotted arrow appears for placing the plank. It’s not an exact science and is ultimately dependent on the general shape and size of your structure. From there, it’s just rinse and repeat until the roof is complete.

How to Build a Large Roof in Sons of the Forest

If you don’t want to build the easy, reliable standard roof but instead test construction skills, then you might be interested in making a large roof so your base feels more spacious. This is where you can get creative with building a roof. For a large roof, I’d set up the same frame style but then put ramps on the frames, followed by adding the standard roof to fill in the remaining roof area.

How to Build a Two-Story Base Roof in Sons of the Forest

Luckily, building a roof on a two-story base follows the same steps as a single-story base. Since you build the roof from below, the easiest option is to build the standard roofing steps I listed earlier. The benefit of having a taller base is it’s difficult for enemies to get on top of it. With my single-story base, I felt like there was always at least one enemy on top of it. So, in my next game, I’ll definitely add at least one more story to my base.

With that, you’ll have a shelter to help protect yourself against enemies, especially those who like to climb and jump at you. Now that we’ve gotten how to build a roof out of the way, check out our other Sons of the Forest guides such as how to heal and how to get the stun baton.
