Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader Thunderfang Choice Guide: Should You Destroy or Spare It?

Should you destroy the Thunderfang or spare it? Here's how to make that choice in and why in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader.

During Act 1, you’ll see an unidentified Voidship on the star map. Approaching and investigating it reveals it to be Thunderfang, a ship belonging to the morally dubious Fellowship of the Void. Should you fire and destroy it or spare it? Here’s our Thunderfang choice guide for Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader.

If you’ve approached the unidentified Voidship in your travel across the Rykard system, you’ve come face to face with the decision to destroy the Thunderfang ship or not. The Fellowship of the Void has questionable morals regarding loot acquisition. However, I wouldn’t recommend destroying the Thunderfang. You should first ask why you can’t identify them.

Why Should You Spare the Thunderfang?

You should spare the Thundnerfang to get powerful gear in the early levels. When you interact with the Thunderfang, a few dialogue options will appear, revealing their true nature as a trading vessel. Simply avoid hostile dialogue options and choose the following line: “Thunderfang, prepare for commercial exchange.”

This will open the Thunderfang’s trading menu, and you’ll be able to use your Profit points to buy highly useful goodies like:

  • Flamer: A powerful area fire attack weapon that I recommend equipping on your Argenta.
  • Medikits: You’ll need them for healing and treating injuries.
  • Melta Charges: For those pesky doors that won’t open.

There are various other combat trade goods to get here, ranging from armor to miscellaneous gear. Circle back to Thunderfang whenever they’re close by, as you won’t be able to trade with them anymore after Act I. Don’t worry, you’ll find more traders down the line in Footfall as you progress the game.

That answers the question of whether you should destroy the Thunderfang or spare it in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader. It’s a simple choice once you know why you should keep it around. Thunderfang is your first trading station where you can grow in power drastically with just a few pickups. Don’t spend too much of your Profit Factor on custom companions or respecs beforehand.
