How Much Time Has Passed Between Diablo 3 and Diablo 4?

Diablo 4 takes place 30 years after Diablo 3. At least, that’s the case according to Diablo: Book of Lorath. Straight from the Diablo 4 team and award-winning author Matthew J. Kirby, Diablo: Book of Lorath chronicles Lorath Nahr’s journey through Sanctuary’s most powerful relics and the story behind them. If you’re interested in reading it, the book releases on June 6, 2023, the same day as Diablo 4.

This tracks with what we know of Lorath Nahr as a character, as well. While he’s a young man when he first appears in Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, Loarth is notably older in Diablo 4 — and is often referred to as an old man by other characters.

In the time that’s passed between Diablo 3 and Diablo 4, millions have been killed in the war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. This aligns with what we’ve seen of Sanctuary in Diablo 4 so far from the beta period. For more than that, however, we’ll likely have to wait on either the release of the book or the game, both of which could expand on that lore.

That’s what we know right now about when Diablo 4 takes place. For more on Diablo 4, stay tuned.
