How to Keep Your Frame Rate from Dropping in Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds

Is the sudden lag killing you more than the competition in PLAYERUNKOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS? We've got the fix for you!

If you’re one of the many shooting fanatics that got in on PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS, then you’re probably one of the unfortunate many that are experiencing frame rate issues. And we all know how much of a drag that can be for high-stakes gun action affairs such as this massively-multiplayer shooter.

Those who’re affected could be churning out a frame rate performance as low as 30 FPS — or even less — slowing gameplay down to the pace of a PowerPoint slideshow. And that’s if the software doesn’t outright freeze on you altogether.

GameSkinny hears your pain, and has the remedy. Here are a few tips to better optimize the fickle settings of PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS for your PC hardware!

Memory Tweaking

One of your first steps should be to work around the amount of memory that you’re running. Even though the minimum RAM required to run the game is set at 6GB, the game will still have some performance issues with anything that isn’t clocked at 10GB.

One method to get around this is to tweak the launch options in your Steam menu with the “-lowmemory” command which — as the name of the action would suggest — will acclimate the frame output to a lower spec requirement, ultimately balancing out the utilities that execute the game without a significant compromise to the fidelity of its visuals.

Removing Executables

Our work in the launch options isn’t done, though, as there are a few pesky executable files in the folder that need to be taken out for the frame rate performance to stay consistent. Eliminating the “sm4-” and “-d3d10” files from the Launch directory will notably improve the frame rate stability of matches, giving you all you need to perfect that K/D ratio.

Graphical Tweaks

To get the most out of PUBG’s graphics and make the game look absolutely gorgeous, check out this PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS Visual and Audio Guide. But, if you’re looking to up your FPS, read on.

There are some extra adjustments that you’ll be able to make in the native settings of PUBG’s that will also assist in running the action at a steady click. However, they may have more of an impact on the visual nature of the game.

The first effect to change is the anti-aliasing preferences because in spite of the realism it lends to the graphics, a higher frame rate count is much more valuable to the competitive shooting experience.

Screen scale is another reasonable concession that you can trade for more FPS, and your efforts will be greatly rewarded. But it is admittedly at the slight expense of the game’s full graphical potential. The one thing that we want to stress is that changing the resolution isn’t a vital step here — the preference isn’t going to dramatically affect framerate performance unless your setup is running more on the low-end than the high one.

The recommended setting is anywhere between 85% and 90% screen scale, as this is where the degradation to the visuals is at its minimum, but we’ll leave that up to you to decide.

Once you apply these changes, you should be able to see a substantial improvement to FPS in PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS.
