Hogwarts Legacy: How to Upgrade the Vivarium

Here's how to upgrade your Vivarium in Hogwarts Legacy for increased beast capacity.

You can first access the Vivarium in Hogwarts Legacy when they return with Deek in “The Elf, The Nab-Sack and the Loom” main story quest. The Vivarium offers a safe space to nurture, breed and interact with the beasts, but its space is limited. Here’s how to upgrade your vivarium in Hogwarts Legacy.

When completing Deek’s quest, Deek mentions you’ll need somewhere to keep the magical beasts you collect. The Room of Requirement spawns just that: The Vivarium, which can hold 12 beasts from four different species.

With a total of 13 beast species in the game, only being able to house four species is not quite enough if you’re trying to clear out beast-related challenges.

The Vivarium isn’t quite upgraded, but you do get more of them. Which is essentially the same thing, right?

The next section of the Vivarium, the Coastal Vivarium, unlocks after at the beginning of “The Plight of the House-Elf” side quest. Heed the owl from Professor Weasley stating Deek has a request to get this moving along.

When you talk to Deek, a frosty-looking orb with metal embellishments is spawned by the Room of Requirement. This section of the Vivarium can also hold four different species and up to 12 magical beasts.

The third upgrade, the Swamp Vivarium, unlocks during “Foal of the Dead” side quest. Once again, Professfor Weasley sends an owl; this time Deek wants to teach you how to breed magical beasts.

Deek will task you with catching a male and female Thestral, along with purchasing the breeding pen spellcraft from Tomes & Scrolls. If players purchased the Deluxe Edition pre-order will already have a female Thestral in their nab-sack.

Once the player completes the tasks set forth by Deek and return to the Room of Requirement, the Swamp Vivarium will spawn. Deek tells you this is the perfect place for the Thestrals. Entering the Swamp Vivarium and finish up the breeding section of the quest will complete it. This section can hold four species and up to 12 magical beasts.

How to Get the Final Vivarium Upgrade

It will be some time before Deek has another quest for you. This time, it involves rescuing a Phoenix before poachers can get to it, in the quest “Phoenix Rising”. Once you bring the Phoenix back to the Room of Requirement, a new chicken coop designed Grassland Vivarium entrance will spawn. Inside, up to three species of beast, along with the Phoenix, can reside with a maximum of12 beasts total.

That is how to fully upgrade the Vivarium in Hogwarts Legacy. With multiple challenges based around catching and breeding beasts, unlocking each section will greatly aid their completion. You’ve got 36 slots once it’s all said and done, which will hopefully be more than enough. If you found this guide helpful, consider checking out some of our other Hogwarts Legacy guides.
