Magikarp Jump — How to Get Gyarados (Get an Event 34)

How to evolve your unassuming Magikarp into an imposing Gyarados in Magikarp Jump.

The whole point of getting Magikarp in the actual Pokemon games is to get a Gyarados, so of course, you want to get one in Magikarp Jump if for no other reason than to say you got one.

Getting a Gyarados added to your collection is easier than you might expect, but don’t get your hopes up that the water dragon is going to join you on your league battles. Once you get your Gyarados, you have to set it free as it can’t compete in the league — it’s just too big. But hey, you get an event to add to the Event Dex in the process.

So let’s get to it: How do you get a Gyarados?

Step 1. Get to Rank 10

This step only applies if you’re new and aren’t rank 10 yet! You progress ranks most quickly via fully leveling Magikarp and setting them loose, so just play like you normally would.

You need to be at least rank 10 so you can get your Magikarp to level 20, the fateful level all Magikarp evolve to the ever-imposing Gyarados.

Step 2. Get a Magikarp to Level 20

This isn’t too hard to do either, just keep pushing forward feeding and training your Magikarp.

Step 3. Tap your Magikarp Repeatedly

You didn’t think that nothing would happen if you tapped the heck out of your Magikarp, did you? Of course, something does: you break its Everstone!

In the mainline Pokemon games, you give a Pokemon an Everstone to prevent it from evolving, and apparently, that’s what they do to keep these Magikarp in non-evolved jumping condition.

Tap your fishy friend until it can’t take it anymore and its Everstone breaks in its tiny little fish fins.

Provided your Magikarp is level 20 or above, it will evolve into Gyarados. With the Gyarados comes a tearful goodbye and the “Adios, Gyarados!” event, which grants up to 10 Diamonds.

It’s sad to see it go, but a new entry to the Event Dex and 10 Diamonds are well-worth this tiny effort.

One last note: As with other Pokemon games, if you evolve a shiny Magikarp (a gold pattern in Magikarp Jump), you’ll get a shiny Gyarados if you evolve it. Potentially worth it if you want a screenshot.
