The Elden Ring Uchigatana is one of the better early-game weapons in the game, especially for those focusing on dexterity builds. It’s especially potent for those with an affinity for dual-wielding, and it causes blood loss buildup, which can be devastating to some bosses and enemies. But where do you find the Uchigatana in the Lands Between?
This quick Elden Ring guide will tell you where to find the Uchigatana, as well as why it’s useful. We’ll also include the sword’s stats, its weapon skill ability, and its passive effects.
How to Find the Uchigatana Location in Elden Ring
If you start as the Samurai class in Elden Ring, you’ll automatically have the Uchigatana as your starting weapon. But for those who want to power stance with it or that choose any other starting class (there are better choices than Samurai depending on your playstyle), the Uchigatana is secreted away in the Lands Between.
Luckily, you can pick up the Uchigatana relatively early in Elden Ring. It can be found in the Deathtouched Catacombs mini-dungeon, located on the high cliffs northwest of the Saintsbridge Site of Grace. What’s even better is two-fold: the dungeon is small and there aren’t many enemies standing in your way.
To get the Elden Ring Uchigatana in Deathtouched Catacombs, first go to Warmaster’s Shack. If you don’t know where Warmaster’s Shack is, it’s east of the Stormhill Shack Site of Grace on the road to Stormveil Castle. From Warmaster’s Shack, go through the forest north of the Shack. Look for the rocks rising up on the right side, and go east up to the plateau in the shadow of the tall stone bridge cutting through the area.
Once you reach the plateau, go east. Continue past the large, square ruins (the square box on the map of the plateau), then drop down at the cliffs beyond it. The entrance to the Deathtouched Catacombs is where the cliffs round slightly on the map. You’ll see a ghost kneeling outside the door.
Go inside Deathtouched Catacombs, and rest at the Site of Grace. Go down the stairs and left at the bottom. Go down two more sets of stairs, then turn a 180 at the bottom. Looking back toward the stairs you just descended, go through the small door on the left, just past the small archway.
Follow the tunnel into the next large room, then go through the door on the left. The Uchigatana is on a corpse at the edge overlooking the floor below.
Uchigatana Passive Effects and Abilities
Though not one of our best weapons in the game, the Uchigatana is a pretty decent early-game weapon that can be upgraded into a mid- to late-game contender depending on your build and style. The Uchigatana scales early to both Strength and Dex equally (both are D grade scaling attributes by default), though it leans toward Dexterity after upgrading to +4 at Blacksmith Hewg.
The Uchigatana also by default the Blood Loss buildup passive effect. This is one of the more powerful status effects in Elden Ring that can melt boss health bars if used effectively.
Whereas typical bleed effects deal damage over time, Blood Loss in Elden Ring builds up via successive hits within a specific timeframe to deal massive chunks of damage at a single time. The Uchigatana isn’t the only weapon that has this ability. You’ve likely experienced this effect in any of the mini-dungeons with gargoyle enemies, such as Stormfoot Catacombs, home of the first Erdtree Burial Watchdog.
Finally, the Uchigatana comes equipped with the Unsheathe weapon skill that allows you to perform two potent attacks.
- A light attack with the Uchigatana performs a short slicing dash for 10 FP that cuts enemies in an arc, which is good for damaging multiple mobs at once. It also has the chance to momentarily stagger some enemies, like the Knights in Limgrave.
- A heavy attack with the Uchigatana performs an overhead strike for 15 FP, giving you the ability to circumvent some shielded enemies (not all, so don’t go wild), and punish some enemies that have low, lunging attacks, like the giant dogs in Caelid. The strike goes over the top of an enemy, slicing down on their head.
Wondering how to use Unsheathe with the Uchigatana? Hold L2/RT, then press R1/RB for the light/slashing attack and R2/RT for the heavy overhead attack. Note, the inputs and attacks are the same whether wielding the Uchigatana single-hand or two-hand.
