Mutagens
Mutagens are used in combination with character abilities to give bonuses to your character Geralt of Rivia. These items are obtained from slaying monsters throughout the Northern Realms.
Types of Mutagen:
There are common, lesser mutagens, and then there are mutagens dropped from specific monsters killed for Geralt's Witcher contracts.
There are also three colors of Mutagen: red, green, and blue. Each color coincides with the specific skill trees.
- Red: Attack Power bonuses in the Combat Sign area
- Green: Alchemy and bomb bonuses; increases Vitality
- Blue: Increases Sign Intensity

Mutagen Slots
The ability slots in the Character Screen are divided into groups of three. Each of these has a mutagen slot to provide special bonuses to the abilities in that group. Since there are only three types of mutagen and four mutagen slots, double up where needed for the bonuses. If you use mutagens that coordinate with the abilities, you’ll get even higher bonuses; e.g. Green Mutagen combined with Alchemy abilities.
You start the game with no Mutagen Slots unlocked, but by the time you reach Level 28, all four slots will be unlocked.
Decoctions
Decoctions are for the experienced Witcher, thanks to their high toxicity and the risk that comes with them. Yet so worth it!
These are alchemy potions made with specific monster mutagens that Geralt gets during a Witcher contract kill. These provide great bonuses, but come with a very high toxicity, so it's best to weigh your options before using.
- Troll Decoction: Constant Vitality regeneration in and out of combat. For Witchers expecting multiple waves of enemies.
- Ekimmara Decoction: A Witcher restores Vitality with every successful strike against an enemy.
- Succubus Decoction: The longer the battle, the harder the Witcher strikes!
- Alghoul Decoction: Adrenaline is generated more quickly by a Witcher in combat, but the effect is broken upon the first successful strike from an enemy.
- Werewolf Decoction: Running, sprinting, and jumping outside of combat doesn't use Stamina.
More will follow in my Potions Guide coming soon which will include how to make bombs and more.
Hope this helps. Don't forget to check through The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Master Guide List for more helpful guides, tips, and tricks to assist you throughout your journey.

Quest4SkunkbudzSeptember 15, 2015, 6:28 pmReferring to the mutagens in The Witcher 3.. What about all the extra mutagens I picked up along the way? After the decoctions are made and the character slots have best mutagens installed theres 100's of these things left over in my inventory.. Do I save them (maybe for something later in the game I dont know about yet.)or sell the extras?
-
I have only kept an extra two on hand just in case for the DLC (season pass) but I have sold the others. I have not come across any other use for them at this point. If I do, this will be updated.

terrance_7555July 19, 2015, 3:42 pmis there any mutagen higher then greater blue mutagen
-
No there is not. You will only find monster specific mutagens, often upon killing them, that can be used to make decoctions.

Stephen_9759May 24, 2015, 12:32 pmmy griffin mutagen only gave 50 vitality to start with from the white orchard griffin. But my friend did the same one and his griffin mutagen gave 150 like you said. Lol
-
It depends on the level of the Griffin. The higher level monster, the higher level mutagen but that's the highest amount. My first Griffin in White Orchard gave me +50 Vitality as well.
You do get awarded with the Griffin Trophy on the first successful kill (goes in your equipment section) that gives a 10% chance to dismember.
Each monster trophy after that each has its own benefit, so be sure to compare and switch around as needed.
