Hogwarts Legacy: How to Fix Ray Tracing Issues

There are ways to improve the ray tracing effects in Hogwarts Legacy on both PC or PS5. Here's how to fix ray tracing effects on either platform.

Ray tracing can be rough on hardware, and to make the game playable for most on first boot Hogwarts Legacy has its ray tracing effects turned down to the bare minimum. Interestingly, some players say the ray tracing effects don’t actually make all that much different even on Ultra. They are present on both PC and PlayStation 5, though not without some issues. In this guide we’ll go over how to fix ray tracing issues on PC and PS5 alike.

Hogwarts Legacy Ray Tracing Issue Fix for PC

The only way to improve ray tracing effects in PC is to manually change settings in the dedicated system file.

Please note that these changes are not meant to decrease the load on your hardware, instead they are meant to significantly increase the quality of ray tracing in Hogwarts Legacy. This solution has been discovered by Reddit user Knochey.

Here’s what you need to do to improve Raytracing in the game:

  1. Go to “C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataLocalHogwarts LegacySavedConfigWindowsNoEditor” folder on your PC.
  2. Right-click on the “engine.ini” file.
  3. Select “Open in Notepad” option.
  4. Copy and paste the following lines into the body of the text:

[SystemSettings]
r.RayTracing.Reflections.ScreenPercentage=100
r.RayTracing.Reflections.SamplesPerPixel=1
r.RayTracing.Reflections.MaxRoughness=0.7
r.RayTracing.AmbientOcclusion.Intensity=1

Once done, save and exit the file and restart the game. You can also adjust some of the numbers on each of the effects to get the best performance / quality balance on your PC, but these settings will improve ray tracing in your game. Though, you very well may take a massive performance hit in the process.

Raytracing Solution for PS5

PlayStation 5 players report that they can’t enable ray tracing effects in the game’s settings, and after restarting the game they go back to default settings. This is a known issue and here is a simple solution:

  1. Go to PS5 home screen.
  2. Select “Settings” menu (gear icon in the top right).
  3. Go to “Saved Data and Game/App Settings” menu.
  4. Select “Game Presets” tab.
  5. Go to “Performance Mode or Resolution Mode“.
  6. Select “Game Default” option.

Now you can restart Hogwarts Legacy and activate ray tracing effects in the “Display Options” menu, and this time they will actually get activated.
