Pokemon X Y Fourth Gym Leader Ramos Guide

The cutest looking military grandpa Pokemon trainer in the game by far.

The journey from Shalour City and Korrina to next city is a very, very short one. You simply just need to pass through route 12 and you will find yourself in Courmarine City, the location with the fourth gym leader in Pokemon X Y.

Ramos, the leader of this gym, is an old man with a seemingly Scottish accent. He also seems to be a military type. His followers are all Pokerangers, dressed in matching uniforms.

Know Your Enemy

I cannot overstate how simple this gym is due to the nature of grass type Pokemon. Their moves are strong only against three types, but they are weak to five types.

According to PokemonDB, mono grass types are weak to fire, ice, poison, flying, and bug. They are strong against water, ground, and rock. They are resistant to water, electric, grass, and ground. They only deal half damage to fire, grass, poison, flying, bug, dragon, and steel.

In other words, you have a ton of options when it comes to battling against grass Pokemon. You can go in with a flying mono type, a fire mono type, a bug mono type, etc. and dominate. Or, even better, go in with a dual type and just tear the place apart.

I used a level 36 Talonflame to make quick work of Ramos and his Pokerangers. Talonflame is a fire/flying type with the ability flame body, which has a 30% chance to inflict burn status on an enemy if it directly attacks Talonflame.

I only had to use three of four of Talonflame’s moves: peck, ember, and roost. Peck and ember will chew through the opponent’s health, often one-shotting them. Roost was used to regain health if need be.

You do not have to use Talonflame; you can use any of the type advantaged Pokemon you have. I’d imagine that a Mega Charizard would one shot most of the enemies with even just ember.

Time to Take Out the Grass

Ramos’ gym is a giant treehouse sort of thing with various ways up. Some of the ways up will lead to dead ends and others will let you progress after beating one of his Pokerangers.

To get to Ramos, you will need to defeat his four followers: Pokemon Ranger Chaise, Pokemon Ranger Brooke, Pokemon Ranger Twiggy, and Pokemon Ranger Maurice. None of them stand a chance against the right team.

Weepinbell (lvl. 31)

After defeating his Weepinbell and turning him into a weeping shell, Ramos will reward you with two items: the Plant Badge and TM86 Grass Knot. Since his reward TM is grass knot, it is probable that his team makes use of this move; I did not see it used, however.

Collect your rewards then make like a try and leaf. Up next, you will be heading to Lumiose City to get the Voltage Badge from the electric-type gym leader Clemont.
