There are dozens of gear options in Wo Long; Fallen Dynasty, and you'll need to know how to upgrade them.

Knowing how to upgrade armor in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is important both early on and in the late game. However, for two completely different reasons. Whether you want to solidify your build, increase stats, or just look cool in combat, we’ll tell you how to make armor more meaningful and effective in this guide.

Before we jump in, it’s important to know that the levels in Wo Long are filled with loot that includes dozens of pieces of armor, divided into four categories:

  • Head armor
  • Chest armor
  • Arm guards
  • Leg guards

The first time through the game, set bonuses and star ratings for these pieces of armor don’t really matter. This is more for late-game players who want to tweak their build in the minute and in specific ways that Team Ninja games are known for.

For now, though, you mostly just want to focus on two things when it comes to armor. Does it look cool, and do the number go up? The first is subjective, but the only reliable way to make that defense number increase is to upgrade armor.

How to Upgrade Armor in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

To upgrade your armor in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, you need to find Leather. In addition to Copper (the main currency in Wo Long), you need 3 Leather of a corresponding rank to increase the stats on a piece of armor

Similar to Dark Souls or Elden Ring, you need Leather of a corresponding rank to add +1 to an armor’s rankings. This will only ever take 3 Leather per rank. For example, upgrading a piece of armor from +1 to +2 will require 3 Rank 1 Leather and a handful of Copper.

Where to Upgrade Armor

To upgrade armor, speak to the game’s solitary blacksmith, Zhu Xia. Until you unlock the Hidden Village hub area, she will appear in missions to aid you at certain points near Battle Flags, though you can’t upgrade armor at Battle Flags specifically.

Once you unlock the Hidden Village, Zhu Xia will move there. Soon after your first visit to this area, she will set up her own shop. It’s just a short hop, skip, and jump down the tree branch path to the right of where you enter the area.

How to Find Armor Upgrade Materials

Check the level rewards before diving into a mission or sub-mission to see what kind of Leather Rank it will be giving you. This is the best way to get more upgrade materials for all your armor pieces.

When playing the main missions, you can usually assume this one truth:

  • When a level says it will reward you with Rank 2 Leather, there will likely be a small number of Rank 3 Leather drops in the level, as well.

By exploring the area, finding all the Flags, and killing all the strongest enemies, you might just find some high-level upgrade materials that will give you a leg up on the next boss that stands in your way.

That’s how to upgrade armor in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Need to know how to upgrade your weapon as well? You can find that guide and more tips for Team Ninja’s latest by visiting our Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty guides page.
