EQNext Landmark Guide: Gathering Wood

A guide to logging in EQNext Landmark.

For this guide I’ll go over gathering wood, or logging. Logging is a bit tricky as some of the trees seem to not cooperate. Overall though, there is a lot less to logging than there is to mining.

Getting Started:

When starting the game, you have a stone axe; Founders also get the Founder’s Pick which works as an axe. I’ve yet to find a tree that has told me I couldn’t gather from it due to not having a high enough level axe. You can acquire higher tier axe by crafting, which I’ll go over in a future guide.

How To Log:

Dragging your axe to the hotbar allows you to toggle it on and off. Find a tree and toggle it  on; a little axe will appear when you highlight over the tree. Clicking the tree with the axe icon will allow you to chop the tree. If you don’t receive any items, or get any messages try repositioning yourself–some of the trees are finicky.

Tips For Logging:

Logging isn’t very extensive, but certain wood is very important for crafting.

Resource Meter:

Here you can see the resource meter. This is also one of the two types of trees I’ve found that gives Striped Wood.

Trees have a green resource meter, kind of like an HP meter. When the meter is depleted the tree will disappear, though sometimes it takes a few seconds. Any chops done after the meter runs out won’t give you any items.

UPDATE: Since the 2/7/2014 update trees on claims can no longer be chopped down.

Burled Wood:

Most of the trees will give you Burled Wood. This is a higher quality item so you won’t get much of it per tree. Burled Wood trees seem a lot more frequent in the greener biomes.

UPDATE: Since the 2/7/2014 update Burled Wood Planks now only need 60 Burled Wood Logs per plank. We can all stop singing the Burled Wood song now!

Striped Wood:

This is much harder to find than the Burled Wood. Currently I haven’t reached any craft that I’ve needed Striped Wood for, but I’ll be on the look out for it. I know for sure that the tall dead-looking trees with round ball like objects on the top, and the trees with red thorns, give Striped Wood. Striped Wood trees seem more frequent in desert type biomes.

Here is the red thorn tree, you can’t see the thorns too well in this image due to the lighting.

That wraps up my basic logging guide. If you have any thoughts, questions, or concerns leave a comment below. Be sure to check my EQNext Landmark guide directory for more guides.
