You know what I love the most about old-school style games? Hidden collectibles! There’s nothing quite like the feeling of seeing your entire collectibles screen filled.

Since gathering collectibles in the first game is pretty monotonous and straightforward, I skipped it in favor of filling out my collection of Colored Gems in Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back.

Let me guess — you’re after the Colored Gems, too! Well you can’t have mine, but I suppose I could tell you how to go about collecting your own. Prepare your stash of extra lives, my friend — you’re going to need them.

Note that the Colored Gems here are listed in chronological order, so feel free to follow along as you crash your way through the game.

Blue Gem Location – Turtle Woods

The Blue Gem is rather straightforward. Simply jump into the first level, Turtle Woods, and complete it without breaking a single box. Don’t you dare even touch a checkpoint.

Be careful when killing enemies as you go for this gem. You don’t want to accidentally spin them into a box, so try jumping on them instead. And when you reach the wall of boxes, just bounce over on the striped fruit box so that you don’t break anything. The Blue Gem will be where the clear gem normally spawns at the end of the level.

Red Gem Location – Snow Go Secret Portal

The Red Gem probably teased you during your first run of Snow Go, but don’t go thinking you can find a way to reach it just by exploring that level. First, you must unlock the Secret Portal that acts as an alternative entrance to Snow Go.

To unlock the Secret Portal, head into Air Crash and wind your way up to the first motorboating section. Instead of jumping on the vehicle, bounce across the boxes in the water to reach the platform on the right that acts as a Secret Portal.

Back in the Warp Room, you’re spit out in front of the brand new Snow Go portal. Head on in and complete the tricky platforming section, dropping down the hole at the end to snag your Red Gem. Now just carefully finish the level to add it to your collection.

Green Gem Location – The Eel Deal

The Green Gem is simply hidden behind an illusory wall within The Eel Deal. Follow the path until you come to the first fork in the road. Hang a right into the room full of Nitro, finding a safe path to the back of the room. Jump through the illusory door and continue onward until you reach the Green Gem at the end of the path.

Die for an easy route back to the checkpoint and finish the level like normal to add the Green Gem to your Collection.

Yellow Gem Location – Plant Food

The Yellow Gem is a bit tricky. After an early checkpoint in front of a motorboat, a timer will start counting down in the bottom-right of your screen. If you manage to beat the timer to the end of the level, you’ll find the Yellow Gem waiting where the clear gem would normally be.

When going for this gem, I suggest not breaking any further checkpoint boxes until you clear it — that way you can try again if you fail.

Purple Gem Location – Bee-Having

About halfway through the Bee-Having level, you’ll find a staircase made of Nitro. If you watch closely, however, you’ll find that the Nitro aren’t actually jumping, which means they’re safe to jump on. Head on up the Nitro staircase to find a secret portal leading to a 2D platforming section.

Make a few careful jumps onward and collect the Purple Gem as your prize. If you have lives to spare, die here for an easy way back to the checkpoint and finish the level to add the Purple Gem to your collection.
