The issue refers to the introduction of a new Steel Dawn and Shelters update, which was supposed to come out on December 1, 2020. But things didn’t go as expected.

Connection Failed Client Out of Date Resolved

On November 24, 2020, the day of the Fallout 76 update, players couldn’t connect to the multiplayer matches after downloading a hefty 14 GB update, which contained new content.

Since then players have been complaining about the “Client out of date” error message on the official Bethesda boards, where the developer relied with the following message:

“We are currently investigating an issue that is causing Xbox users and Microsoft Store users on Windows 10 to download an update that puts their client out of date. Keep an eye out on this thread for updates.”

The error occurred due to timing issues in the update itself, which, as already mentioned, was supposed to come out on December 1, 2020. Since Bethesda was not able to change the inner clock of the update, which was the root of the problem, they simply released the Steel Dawn and Shelters update a week earlier to the joy of Fallout 76 players with the following message:

“Currently, we’re performing maintenance for all platforms, and Fallout 76 will be offline for around six hours to apply Update 24 a bit early. When maintenance is over, you’ll be able to get started with the Steel Dawn questline, your first C.A.M.P. Shelter, and everything else this update contains.”

As promised, six hours later the new update has been launched and the issue was fully resolved.
