Update 1.6 has introduced a variety of new resources to harvest, a farm layout to explore, and NPC interactions to witness. One of these is Moss, used to craft the Statue of Blessings. Needed in large amounts, this is how to get Moss in Stardew Valley 1.6.
How to Find Moss in Stardew Valley
Moss is a necessary component for a handful of crafting recipes. It’s found on wild trees, specifically pine trees, and can be gathered in all seasons except Winter. It randomly spawns but can consistently be found in Cindersap Forest and near the Mines. It even appears on wild trees growing on your farm plot.
When hunting for it, look at the trunks of pine trees for green parts covering it. Moss is very natural looking and can be easy to miss if you’re not paying attention, especially if the tree is surrounded by grass.
To harvest, you can chop down the tree it’s growing on. If you don’t have an axe, you can slice it off the bark with a weapon. You can even use a bomb and gather it after the explosion.
Some people are finding Moss isn’t as abundant as other players. My first time seeing Moss was during Summer, after a whole season of hunting for it. Others have the resource appearing endlessly on their farm and some have to wait until a Green Rain. The spawn rate doesn’t seem to be consistent across the board.
Best Way to Farm Moss in Stardew Valley
While you can find Moss throughout Spring, Summer, and Fall, the hottest season is the best to farm the resource. This is due to a new weather type called Green Rain that only happens in summer. This magical precipitation causes Wild Trees and Weeds to grow or become covered in Moss.
You want to spend as much time as you can during the Green Rain gathering resources. I head to Cindersap Forest during the rain since there are large amounts of trees there that can sprout. You also may have a Mossy Seed fall, which allows you to grow a rare wild tree.
Not only should you gather from the trees, but you also want to whack all the weeds, especially the large ones. These take up four squares and always drop Moss. All weeds that grow and any transformed trees will disappear or return to normal the next morning, taking extra Moss with them.
During a single Green Rain event, I was able to gather over 150 clumps of Moss, a Mossy Seed, and endless amounts of Fiber. If you want to stockpile those resources, this is the perfect time.
How to Use Moss in Stardew Valley
Moss is a component in seven crafting recipes, with the most resource-intensive being the Statue of Blessings.
- Moss Soup: Restores 70 Energy, 31 Health. Unlocked at Foraging level 3.
- Requires x20 Moss.
- Speed-Gro x5: Guaranteed to increase growth rate by at least 10%. Unlocked at Farming level 3.
- Requires x1 Pine Tar and x5 Moss.
- Mushroom Log: Grows mushrooms every so often. The more wild trees are nearby, the better it works. Unlocked at Foraging level 4.
- Requires x10 Hardwood and x10 Moss.
- Deluxe Bait x5: Causes fish to bite even faster and increases the size of the “fishing bar”. Unlocked at Fishing level 4.
- Requires x5 Bait and x2 Moss.
- Deluxe Worm Bin: Produces Deluxe Bait on a regular basis. The worms are self-sufficient. Unlocked at Fishing level 8.
- Requires x1 Worm Bin, and x30 Moss.
- Challenge Bait x5: A “perfect” catch yields triple the fish. However, each time a fish escapes the “fishing bar”, the catch is reduced. Unlocked through the Fishing Mastery Totem.
- Requires x5 Bone Fragment, and x2 Moss
- Statue of Blessings: Touching the statue gives a unique blessing every day. Recipe unlock unknown.
- Requires x999 Fiber, x999 Sap, x999 Stone, and x333 Moss.
