Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: Indigo Disk DLC — How to Find and Catch Smeargle

You can now find and catch Smeargle in the Indigo Disk DLC for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Here's how.

Smeargle has been a top pick among competitive Pokemon players in recent years, and you can now add it to your team. While you can come across it anywhere, that doesn’t mean you’ll see it everywhere. Here’s how to find and catch Smeargle in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: Indigo Disk.

If you want to add a Smeargle to your team in the Indigo Disk DLC, then you won’t have to look very far. This Pokemon can be found throughout all four biomes in the Terarium. That said, it’s classified as a rare spawn in the Pokedex.

The best strategy to find this Normal-type is to dash around on Miraidon or Koraidon until you find one. While the task may seem a bit daunting, I found my Smeargle within minutes of exploring the Savanna biome (where you can also find Trapinch). Given that this is the first area you’ll enter during your playthrough, you could chock it up to luck. However, I found loads of these guys hanging out here, so it’s likely that you’ll encounter a few as well.

While finding a Smeargle is relatively simple, this Pokemon is deceptively tough to catch in the Indigo Disk DLC. This is because it’s solely equipped with the move Sketch. If you’re not familiar with this attack, it allows Smeargle to learn any move used against it — but just once. Because it will quickly exhaust this single-use move, Smeargle will inevitably struggle until it faints unless you do something to prevent it.

To avoid this lose-lose scenario, my advice is to use False Swipe and start throwing Poke Balls. This will allow Smeargle to learn the attack and continue landing hits until you manage to catch it. And believe me, you’ll be glad this move has 40 PP because your opponent boasts a much lower catch rate than most wild Pokemon.

I went through loads of Poke Balls (and several Smeargle) before I finally managed to make the catch with an Ultra Ball. Hopefully, you’ll learn from my mistakes and go in with a solid strategy. This will ultimately land you a competitively viable team member. But that’s how you can find Smeargle and catch it.
