When you start The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the awakened Demon King drains Link of all his hearts and stamina, giving us players an excuse to do the whole thing all over again. But how many hearts, exactly, are the maximum amount of hearts in TotK?

As it turns out, you can get all the hearts that Link has during the intro sequence back… and then some. The same applies for all three extra wheels of stamina. This means that you can get up to two full rows of hearts in total — and these are big rows. But just how many hearts is that?

In total, you can get 40 hearts by obtaining Heart Containers. This is 10 more than in Breath of the Wild. There are a variety of ways to get to 40 hearts, but one above all is the most reliable.

How to get Heart Containers in Tears of the Kingdom

The best way to increase your total number of hearts in Tears of the Kingdom is by finding and completing the 200 shrines found throughout Hyrule. You will also earn one Heart Container when you complete each of the four story dungeons and I know there is at least one side quest line that results in you getting to choose a Heart Container or Stamina Wheel chunk as a reward.

That’s all you need to know about the TotK maximum heart count. For guides on how to solve Shrines, Dungeons, and other ways to get more hearts, visit our Totk tips hub.
