Angry Birds Evolution Beginner’s Guide

Everything you need to know to get a head start when playing Angry Birds Evolution.

In a refreshing take on a classic series, Angry Birds Evolution pits birds against pigs in a new way that incorporates many interesting RPG elements with simple and addicting gameplay. From an overhead angle, you must shoot your birds at pigs to protect your eggs (again!), as well as earn lots of experience and cool loot.

In this guide, I’m going to go over a number of tips and tricks that will help you get started in this new iteration of Angry Birds. There’s more to learn in this game than any that came before, so strap in!

The Basics

Each battle features different kinds of destructible obstacles that stand in the way of your perfect shot. Some are only hindrances — but others are switches or levers that set off explosives which you can take advantage of to add a bit of flare to your pig slaughter. Some obstacles can even be used to make complex shots that will hit pigs in their weak spots. For example, if you shoot a pig in the back, it’ll do much more damage.

During your battles in Angry Birds Evolution, you’ll meet a variety of pigs. Most are straightforward and just exist to deal damage to you — but others will call in reinforcements, heal, or do something else to be a big pain in your feathery butt. These will be higher priority targets for you, as some can even disrupt your super shots. So you’ll want to focus on taking them out before moving on to regular ol’ pigs.

Types of Birds and What They Do

There are five different colors of Angry Birds: red, blue, black, white, and yellow. Each bird gets a super shot that is based on its color. Here’s what each one does:

  • Red Bird Super Shot: Best for taking out large enemies, as it causes the first pig hit to take lots of damage and bounce around like a bird, hurting its own teammates.
  • Blue Bird Super Shot: Best for dealing with lots of small enemies, especially with their backs exposed, as it splits the bird into three for even more damage.
  • Black Bird Super Shot: Explosive and can hop over terrain and other enemies to hit in a large AoE circle.
  • White Bird Super Shot: A wide and long line that hits every enemy in its path for a decent amount of damage. It is best used when dealing with enemies that are bunched together.
  • Yellow Bird Super Shot: Pierces through its target, and is great for trying to hit the same enemies multiple times.

Collecting and Using Eggs

Eggs are where you will be getting your birds from. Each egg has a chance to be a different bird that belongs to its color. The birds that come out of the eggs can have anywhere from one to five stars, with more stars meaning more powerful birds — and there’s a slight chance that an egg will hatch a shiny bird with some bonus stats.

Each bird has a level, and can be evolved to become more powerful. However, a level 20 one star yellow bird is weaker than a level 1 two star yellow bird. In other words, stars are more important than level in determining a bird’s power. To level up a bird, you will need to consume other birds and spend gold, so farming eggs is essential for having a powerful team. (Check out our egg farming guide for Angry Birds Evolution to get more info on how to do that.)

There are two kinds of eggs in Angry Birds Evolution: regular and premium eggs.

  • Regular Eggs can be bought with tickets or the friendship currency that is gained by sending each other gifts — and you can also acquire them for free at least once a day. These eggs hatch into birds with 1-4 stars.
  • Premium Eggs can be bought only with gems, and they yield birds with 2-5 stars. You can also receive one for free every two days.

Eggs can be accessed through the hatchery in the little town area with other buildings.  You have no control over color in the hatchery, so if you are farming for a specific kind of egg, you will want to stick to battles in that color’s area.

How to Utilize Scouts

Your first three levels in Angry Birds Evolution are spent collecting your scouts. You can use them to go on a mission, with one recharge taking about an hour. They can be refilled with 150 gems for all three or 1 energy berry for one scout. Occasionally, you can watch an advertisement for a single scout refill, too.

Scout missions provide you with battles to fight to gather materials in order to progress the storyline. Not only that, but they will occasionally give you PvP matches and gold. It is best to save your scouts for collecting materials to further the story, as this is the only way to get them. If you use your scouts before needing to harvest materials, you will have more down time and less play time.

Clans and Rewards

Clans are a great way to make friends in Angry Birds Evolution. Joining one will also get you some gold in your daily tasks section when you’re still in the tutorial part of the story. There are also some amazing perks that can be unlocked for members by spending gold to level your clan. These perks include:

  • A fourth scout
  • A smart bomb that drops once every battle
  • An extra egg after specific battles
  • A first aid kit that drops once every battle

How to Play PvP

Players fight each other in the Oinktagon by playing Oinkball in Angry Birds Evolution. In this game, players have an arena that is similar to a tennis court. There are five pigs at the start of battle, with more being thrown in as the battle continues. Your goal is to place as many of those pigs as possible on the enemy’s side of the Oinktagon. After each shot, the pigs will attack whoever owns the side they’re on. Whoever dies first is the loser.

Winners receive PvP trophies that determine their ranking on a ladder. They also receive dungeon keys that can be used to access dungeons on the world map.

What Currency Does and How to Earn It

As is the case with any free-to-play game, there’s a catch to this otherwise fun spin on a classic series: there’s a ton of different currencies — including gems, gold, tickets, friendship, and evolution material.

  • Gems are purchased with real money and can be used in place of other currencies if you do not have enough for a specific purchase. You can also get a few of these bad boys here and there by heading into your collections section and checking achievements.
  • Gold is earned from completing missions, or given as a little reward for completing other tasks, doing well in battle, and going on scouting missions. It is mainly used for leveling up birds.
  • Tickets are earned in battle and used for PvP and regular eggs.
  • Friendship is used for regular eggs and is earned by sending/receiving gifts with friends.
  • Evolution material is earned in battle and is color specific. It is necessary for evolving a max level bird.

Extra Tips and Tricks

Here are some more tips for making sure you get the most out of Angry Birds Evolution:

  • Kill the tanky pigs that summon reinforcements as soon as possible
  • Kill the smaller pigs with trumpets that disrupt your super shots
  •  Frequently check the collection building to see if you’ve earned gems
  • After you’ve passed the pyramid, you can claim a registration gift that gives you a good amount of different currencies
  • After earning the ability to play with golden pigs, kill them before their timer runs out or you’ll lose out on tons of gold
  • Egg drops from battle are the color of the area they dropped in
