Titanfall Guide: R-97 Compact SMG Attachments, Mods, and Challenges

Want to win those unexpected close-range fights in Titanfall? Then check out this R-97 Compact SMG guide!

The R-97 is a compact submachine gun in Titanfall. It doesn't have a lot of range, but it is great at close combat. It doesn't have many uses, but it does very well at what it can do. Some people do not like this SMG, but I found it is good when used right.

This gun lends itself well to the fast-paced environment of Titanfall. You can run and gun with the R-97, move quickly around the battlefield, and kill people while doing it.

Choose this gun if you like to constantly move during combat and get up close to your enemies. I'll be going over the best ways to use the R-97 Compact SMG,as well as each attachment, mod, and challenge.

For other tips and guides, check out the Titanfall Guide List.

This guide will cover everything about the R-97 Compact SMG including:

  • Weapon Basics - The stats and general info on the gun.
  • Attachments - Each attachment and what they do.
  • Mods - Each mod and what they do.
  • Challenges - List of every challenge for this gun.

Weapon Basics - Get to know your R-97 Compact SMG

At first glance, this gun does not look that good. The high firing rate makes up for that though. The damage, accuracy, and range are low, but it doesn't matter when you are filling your enemies with many bullets.

  • Great gun for close-range combat.
  • Fires very fast and increased further with a mod.
  • Low recoil despite it being so fast.

Attachments - Everybody gets one

HCOG

I hope you like the HCOG because that's all you get. It stands for Holographic Combat Optical Gunsight. Though it is the only one you get, it is a good scope. It has a 1.85x manification, which is great for this gun. This is a short-range gun anyway.

  • Use when you need to zoom a little.
  • Good for getting people at medium range.

Mods - Customize Your SMG

Extended Magazine

This mod adds 10 extra shots to the magazine. This makes it so that you don't have to reload as often. Unlike other guns, the extended magazine is not as helpful for this gun. 10 extra shots does not make much of a difference when you are firing so many shots.

Scatterfire

This mod increases the fire rate to the max, but lowers the accuracy. It is helpful because you don't need to worry about the loss of accuracy. The R-97 is best at close range, so the increased fire rate gives you a better chance to win unexpected fights.

Suppressor

The Suppressor mod lowers the firing noise and muzzle flash for the gun. Enemies are also unable to detect you on minimaps when you fire your weapon.

Not the best, but decent if you're sneaking up on people.

Challenges - Master Quick Fire Combat

There are 6 categories of challenges for the R-97 Compact SMG, each with multiple tiers to complete.

If It Moves

This category involves killing enemies. This means any enemy, such as a Pilot, Grunt, Spectre, or Titan.

Killing 25 enemies unlocks the Suppressor mod. The rest give experience and Amped R-97 burn cards. For more info on burn cards, check out the Weapon Burn Cards Guide.

Top Gun

These require you to kill actual players, the Pilots. 15 Pilot kills unlocks the Scatterfire mod. The rest give experience and Amped R-97 burn cards.

Machine War

Spectre kills, the robot minions, count towards these challenges. Killing 25 Spectres unlocks the Extended Magazine mod.

The Expendables

This category is all about killing Grunts. 50 Grunt kills unlocks the HCOG scope.

This Is My Weapon

Just using the gun for certain periods of time completes these challenges. They give experience and burn cards.

Off The Dome

This category requires you to get headshots with this gun. Like the previous category, these challenges give experience and burn cards.
