How to Remove Broken Mods for The Sims 4

As most of The Sims community will recommend, it’s best to disable your mods before a big content drop. Though we’re past that now, you’ll want to bear in mind the game’s mod folder to remove them on the next large patch day to avoid conflicts.

The Sims 4 Mod Folder Location

You need to know where to find your mods to remove them. You’ll want to look for the following directory if you installed The Sims 4 to its default:

  • C:[Username]DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4MODS

Replace the [Username] portion with your Windows username and you should find it there.

You can also use the folder above to test if individual mods are broken by removing a copy of all the folders to another location and putting them back in the MODS folder one at a time to see if each one works.

To remove broken mods, you need to delete the folder for that mod. To completely delete the mod, you also need to delete the file named localthumbscache.package to prevent the mod from reappearing.

This file is found in C:[Username]DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4. You should also delete the files ending with .cache, but don’t delete the directory itself, to help prevent deleting mods from reappearing.

When or if the mod receives an update to be compatible with the current version of the game, then you can reinstall the mod.

The Sims 4: Where to See All Broken Mods in March 2023

The combination of the Infant Update and Growing Together left most The Sims 4 mods broken due to the changes in lifestages and new interaction options. While the community is working to fix most of them, it’s taking time.

You can find a list of mods affected by these updates on The Sims forum here, and as a bonus, this list is being updated to reflect which mods have since been fixed. This list does not include any mods that deal with content rated above T.

As most modders are likely aware of issues caused by updates, please be respectful when informing creators about issues you’ve run into with their content. Your The Sims 4 mods are broken now, but they won’t always be. While you wait, you can check out our The Sims 4 guides such as the list of Toddler Quirks or learn about Midlife Crises.
