Minecraft: How to Get Honeycomb

Getting honeycomb from bees in Minecraft isn't a clear process, but with our guide you can become an expert beekeeper.

Honeycomb is used for a few crafting recipes in Minecraft, so you’ll want to get your hands on some while you play. We’ll walk you through finding and safely harvesting honeycomb so you don’t spend your time in Minecraft getting stung by bees. We will also explain how to farm honeycomb and what exactly it is used for.

Where to Find Honeycomb in Minecraft

Just like in real life, the only way to get Honeycomb is to find some bees. The most common biomes to find bees in are Meadow Mountains and Cherry Groves, although they do also spawn in Forest biomes. Their hives will always be on a tree. The easiest way to find these hives is by finding a set of bees, then following them straight to their home hive.

To gather a hive’s honey, you’ll need a pair of Shears. You’ll also need to wait until the hive has actually produced honey. When a hive has honeycomb ready to harvest, the holes on the side of the hive will begin oozing honey.

When you see the honey begin to drip out of the hive, don’t immediately use your Shears on the hive. Doing so will anger the bees, causing their eyes to turn red and making them chase and attack you.

Instead, craft a campfire and place it directly below the hive. I recommend waiting a few seconds to make sure the campfire is in position before using your Shears on the hive. This will let you gather the honeycomb without upsetting the bees.

How to Farm Honeycomb in Minecraft

When it comes to starting a honeycomb farm, you have two main options. Firstly, you could craft your own beehives and wait for bees to enter them. From there, you could constantly breed the bees to fill the rest of your hives.

If you want to get your bee farm going more quickly, you could gather wild hives with their bees instead. To do this, all you’ll need is some patience and a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. An axe will work the fastest on beehives, but you could use a pickaxe as well.

Find a wild beehive, wait for the bees to return to it, and then mine it with your Silk Touch tool. The entire hive will drop with all of its contents intact. Open your inventory and select the beehive to see the number of bees and honey within it.

Once you have decided between gathering wild hives and making your own, it’s time to set up your farm. The safest method is to place your bees a few blocks above the ground, then place a campfire beneath them. It’s exactly like what you would do while harvesting wild honey. This method will ensure that you don’t accidentally anger any bees while harvesting from your farm.

While making your farm, keep in mind that the bees will need to fly to flowers to gather pollen for their honey. Either build the bee farm near a patch of flowers, or create one around it while you set up your hives. This will ensure that you get more honey as fast as possible.

What is Honeycomb Used For in Minecraft

Honeycomb is a necessary material for three crafting recipes, including beehives, candles, and honeycomb blocks. It is also used as a wax to prevent specific blocks from oxidizing.

Beehive Crafting Recipe

The beehive recipe requires six planks of any wood type and three honeycomb. On a crafting table, fill the first row with half of your wood, the middle row with your honeycomb, and the bottom row with the rest of your wood. This will make a single beehive that fits three bees and up to five honey at once.

Candle Crafting Recipe

The recipe for candles requires one honeycomb and one string. The only requirement for this crafting recipe is that the string is placed in the block directly above the honeycomb.

This recipe will create a single, uncolored candle. To make a colored candle, you’ll need to combine a finished candle with any color dye. Candles can be used as a light source after placing them down and lighting them with a flint-and-steel. Between one and four candles can be placed on one block. A single candle emits a small amount of light, but the brightness increases as additional candles are added to the block.

Four honeycombs can be combined to craft one honeycomb block. All you have to do is open up either your inventory crafting or a crafting table, then place four honeycombs in a two-by-two area. These blocks are perfect for making bee-themed builds and other decorations.

Using Honeycomb to Prevent Oxidation in Minecraft

When a block that can oxidize, like a copper block, touches air, it slowly begins changing color. While this is often a fun process to watch, you won’t always want a block to oxidise. Using honeycomb on an oxidizable block will wax it, preventing it from oxidizing. You’ll know the waxing process worked because your honeycomb will disappear and small particles will appear around the oxidized block.

Using honeycomb to wax a block can be done at any stage of oxidation. Waxing a partially or fully oxidized block of copper will keep the oxidation that has already occurred while preventing any more from happening. It’s a great way to use oxidized blocks in your build without having to worry about their colors changing.
