EVE Player Celebrities – The Villain: The Mittani

The self-proclaimed king of space and EVE's most famous tyrant. Love him or loathe him, he is the poster boy for EVE Online.

The Mittani – or, more affectionately, Mittens – is perhaps the darkness to Chribba’s light. Formerly a “spymaster” who rose to prominence as the leader of the notorious Goonswarm Federation, The Mittani has proven to be a sharp-tongued, devious and ambitious.

Having sprung forth from the Something Awful forum culture who “don’t want to ruin the game, just your game,” Mittens has revelled in playing the role of villain. He has guided his Goons (“my people”) and their allies (currently the CFC) to a position of political and military dominance within EVE’s sovereignty gameplay, whilst undoubtedly imprinting the Goon stamp on EVE culture as a whole.

The Mittani’s EVE journey has been an interesting one worthy of greater focus than can be done justice here, with his tenure as an effective chairman of the CSM brought short by unprecedented mainstream media attention as the result of some ill-judged public behaviour. The resulting media storm is undoubtedly behind The Mittani’s drive to deliver a journalistic platform focusing on EVE Online and relatable titles.

The resulting website, TheMittani.com, is now EVE Online‘s premier third-party news site and more besides. As TMC continues to grow, it stands as a testament to The Mittani’s organisation and commitment to a cause.

The space tyrant turned media mogul remains a divisive figure for many reasons, but I suspect mainly it’s because he likes it that way.

Broken paramedic and coffee-drinking Englishman whose favourite dumb animal is an oxymoron. After over a decade of humping and dumping the fat and the dead, my lower spine did things normally reserved for Rubik's cubes, bringing my career as a medical clinician to an unexpectedly early end. Fortunately, my real passion is in writing and given that I'm now highly qualified in the art of sitting down, I have the time to pursue it. Having blogged about video games (well, mostly EVE Online) for years, I hope to channel my enjoyment of wordcraft and my hobby of gaming into one handy new career that doesn't involve other people's vomit.
