Lies of P: How to Manage Carry Weight and Encumbrance

Don't carry all the heavy load lest you suffer in Lies of P.

You’re bound to find a lot of items in Lies of P. However, equipping heavier ones can cause debilitating effects to your character. As such, it’s important to be mindful of the total weight of items that you have equipped. Here’s how to manage carry weight and encumbrance in Lies of P.

How to Manage Carry Weight and Encumbrance Lies of P

The carry weight and encumbrance mechanic is affected by the Capacity stat. Here’s a quick summary:

  • Capacity determines your total carry weight or limit.
  • All gear pieces that you equip have an associated weight. These include weapons, Legion Arms, amulets, and defense parts. Consumable and throwable items don’t count.
  • If the current weight of equipped items is around 60% of your limit, you’ll see a “slightly heavy” warning. I advise you not to worry about it at that stage.
  • If the current weight reaches 80% of your limit, you’ll see a “heavy” warning. This is when you need to be concerned. This will lower your movement speed, as well as your dodge speed and distance.
  • If you go above this limit, your character will no longer be able to run or dodge.

Tips When Equipping Items in Relation to Capacity or Weight

Here are some tips if you’re worried about Lies of P carry weight and encumbrance:

  • You can allocate a few points into Capacity (no more than 20) if you really need an increase to the limit.
  • For the most part, I suggest just equipping one weapon. Although you can have two weapons, the second armament will count toward this threshold.
  • High-end defense parts with better stats tend to weigh more, but you don’t need to equip them all at the same time.
  • Take note of various status effects applied by enemies and bosses. For instance, when I fought bosses that applied the Overheat debuff, I made sure to have a converter that improved my resistance against fire damage. At the same time, I switched to a lower-end cartridge that’s also lighter, since I didn’t need protection against Shock, Disruption, or Break.
  • The storage function of the Stargazer isn’t really necessary. Only gear pieces that you have equipped count toward the active weight computation. As such, you can keep all your weapons in your inventory so you can check and swap whenever you prefer.

Lastly, I should note that Lies of P does not have a poise mechanic for your character. In Dark Souls and related games, equipment does have a poise stat. It’s a mechanic where your character won’t flinch if you’re using heavy gear pieces or heavy weapons. In this game, however, being completely encumbered or wielding massive weapons won’t matter. I was genuinely surprised, and somewhat frustrated, when even tiny puppet babies could interrupt my weapon swings.
