The Resident Evil 4 remake offers many different weapons for players to use, most of which will be fondly remembered by fans of the original 2004 title. One weapon that will be new to everyone is the Bolt Thrower. It certainly has some ties to another old favorite, but the primary way it’s used is unlike anything else. Stealth is a viable option in the remake and the new Bolt Thrower can complement the play style well. This crossbow-like weapon shoots physical bolts, allowing for quiet kills. Although it’s on the weaker side and has a slow fire rate, everything is balanced out by the versatility it brings to the table.
The most unique aspect about it is that the bolts can be picked back up after they’re shot. Any bolts you shoot at an enemy can be retrieved once they’ve died, and any that make contact with the environment can be recovered at the same spot. As long as they’re not sent to a place far out of your reach, you can enjoy reusing the same ammunition repeatedly.
Another way to use it is with attachable mines. Acting like proximity explosives and understandably making them unrecoverable, these bolts can be directly shot at enemies or placed in the environment as traps.
Fans might put two and two together with this knowledge as the original Resident Evil 4 featured a weapon called the Mine Thrower. That weapon has essentially been compiled into the new Bolt Thrower. Whether you’re looking to go quiet or cause some explosions, nothing else is as adaptable.

How to Get the Bolt Thrower in the Resident Evil 4 Remake

The Bolt Thrower needs to be bought from the Merchant. It’s one of the first items he offers and he’ll already have one in stock when you initially meet him in at the beginning of Chapter 2 (skip the opening fight to get there faster). He’s hard to miss since there’s a small cutscene briefly showing him and his first shop is right outside the Abandoned Factory you’ll be exiting from.
Not to mention, he’s not going to take it out of his offerings until it’s yours. Even if you don’t buy the Bolt Thrower now, you’ll still have a chance to every time you visit his shop.

It will take up a 2×4 space in your Attache Case and typically costs 10,000 Pesetas. Unless you’ve been actively avoiding and running past as many enemies as possible, there’s a good chance you’ll have enough to buy it. Any treasures you have can likely make up the difference too.
If you want to save a bit of money or just want to check out the SR M1903 rifle first, waiting might just be the best idea. The Merchant will offer the Bolt Thrower as the limited-time sale item for Chapter 3. Purchasing it then will only cost you 8,000 Pesetas instead.
