Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: How to Get Defog HM

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl's Defog is much easier to bear than the original. Here's how to get the Hidden Move.

Defog in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl gets a slight boost thanks to the quality of life features added in each of the remakes. While the oddball HM is still necessary for getting through key places, including Mt. Coronet, you won’t use up vital move slots on this Hidden Move anymore, and you probably shouldn’t, not until the postgame anyway.

Much has changed in the Gen IV remakes, including how you access and use Hidden Moves. Here’s where to find Defog and whether it’s worth teaching your Pokemon.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Defog Location

You’ll first get this HM in The Great Marsh near Pastoria, the city after Veilstone. Enter the Marsh (paying 500 Poke for the convenience) and speak with the trainer near the tram. She’ll give you several TM 97s, which contain Defog. That’s right, Defog is now a TM just like Rock Smash and Waterfall.

However, you can’t use the HM yet. You’ll have to defeat Crasher Wake, Pastoria’s Gym leader before you’re allowed to use Defog from the Pokemon Watch. He’s a Water user, so bring Grass and Electric along to make that fight easier.

After that, you can use it in any location where… well, where there’s fog. It’s not something you’ll need often until the later parts of the game.

Is Defog Worth It in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?

Not really, not in the main game at least. Defog removes Reflect, Safeguard, and Barrier effects from enemy Pokemon, and few trainers in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl use those moves.

They’re popular in the metagame, though, so if you plan on taking your Sinnoh Pokemon team online, Defog is probably a good choice. If you use or sell the original set of TMs, you can buy more from the Battle Park.
