Control Guide: How to Get the Shield Ability From Field Training in “A Good Defense”

Getting the Shield ability in Control is easy, but it might not seem like it. Use this Control guide to get the Shield power early in your playthrough.

Figuring out how to get the Shield ability in Control stumped me for about half of the game. It’s because opening the path to the Field Training Area isn’t clear at all, even after you power through most of the game.

Early in the game, you find yourself in the Central Maintenance area near the powerplant. Eventually, you get the side mission called “A Good Defense.” It tasks you with getting into the Field Training area to deal with an Object of Power.

The problem is that Field Training is locked behind a pulsating red barrier. Like other similar barriers, you might assume you can’t get by this one until later in the game. That’s not the case. You can do it right now.

Getting Past Field Training’s Red Barrier

While standing in front of the door to Field Training, look around for the three red blocks around the room. Shoot them.

Here are their locations just in case:

  1. On the ceiling to the left of the Field Training door
  2. On the backside of the column in the middle of the room
  3. On the ceiling to the right of the Field Training door
    • Just before the hallway leading to the elevator

Once you destroy all three blocks, the red wall barring the entrance to the Object of Power guarding the Shield ability will be open.

Simply enter and find the safe in the back right-hand corner of the room. Interact with it and complete the Astral Plane section to nab your new power.

Since the Shield ability is a great tool for staying alive in some of the game’s harder areas (which lie just ahead in your playthrough), it’s good to know you can get the ability now.
