Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG that marks the Final Fantasy series' second venture into the world of online multiplayer. Developed for PC and published by Square Enix in 2010, this MMO immerses players in the fantasy realm of Eorzea, where they must explore the world and defend it against the threat of the Garlean Empire's invation and hostile deities called Primals. Upon its launch, the game was initially met with negative reviews -- with gamers and critics alike agreeing that while the graphics were beautiful, the gameplay, interface, and general mechanics felt underwhelming and incomplete. In response, Square Enix suspended subscription fees for the game, then postponed its development for PlayStation consoles. After bringing in a new director for the game and taking time to rebuild the entire project, the original servers were shut down and the game was relaunched as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. This new version of the game was praised by its fanbase, and has spawned two expansions thus far: FFXIV Heavensward and FFXIV Stormblood. In the base game and throughout these two expansions, players can choose from a variety of Job classes for their characters to follow, and face down a number of foes both large and small in PvE and PvP modes. They can also complete Trials, where groups of adventurers come together to try and bring down a powerful boss.
