Top 5 Best Sorcerer Races in Baldur’s Gate 3

Here are the top 5 best Sorcerer races in Baldur's Gate 3.

Sorcerers are one of the most powerful DPS casters in the game, so they work well with races that provide defensive bonuses. Options that improve their spell list or provide some utility and mobility also work quite well. Here are my top 5 best Sorcerer races in Baldur’s Gate 3.

What Are the Top 5 Best Sorcerer Races in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Githyanki

Githyanki are an incredible Sorcerer racial option for several reasons. First, you gain proficiency with medium armor which drastically boosts your defenses. This also frees you up from taking Mage Armor so you can take another spell on your already small spell list. Second, you get some excellent mobility and utility options with a free Jump, Misty Step, and Mage Hand once per Long Rest. Finally, you can fill any skill requirement that your party lacks with Astral Knowledge like having all Charisma-based skills.

Shield Dwarf

Similarly to the Githyanki, Shield Dwarves allow you to wear medium armor which is incredible for casters. Furthermore, you also get Resistance to a common damage type which is Poison. This trait allows you to even roll saving throws against being Poisoned with Advantage. Last but not least, that Darkvision trait ensures you won’t have a Disadvantage on your ranged spell attack rolls in the dark.

Tiefling

Tieflings help immensely with the Sorcerer’s short spell list. Besides getting you Fire damage Resistance, you’ll get three bonus spells depending on your subrace. I highly recommend either Asmodeus or Mephistopheles. In fact, I prefer Asmodeus for a decent ranged cantrip, Hellish Rebuke for a weaponized reaction, and Darkness for some crowd-control. You get all of these to cast for free once per Long Rest.

Half-Elf

Half-Elves are highly versatile for Sorcerers since you can choose a few different benefits based on the subrace. First off, you get Light Armor proficiency so that you don’t have to take Mage Armor. Then, High Half gives you an extra cantrip to round them up better, Wood Half gives you more movement speed, and Drow Half gives you extra spells. I prefer the Drow Half since three extra spells is a must-have for Sorcerer.

Drow

Speaking of extra spells for Drow, while the Half-Elf Drow gives you light armor in addition to those extra spells, the pure Drow gives you Perception and better Darkvision. As for the spells, Faerie Fire is incredible in the early game to boost your team’s attack power. Darkness is great for overall crowd control and debuffing enemies. Overall, the Drow provides an alternative to the Half-Elf Drow package.

That’s it for my top 5 best Sorcerer races in Baldur’s Gate 3. For more BG3 guides, check out the best Sorcerer gear as well as my best Sorlock multiclass build.
