Let's talk about how to unlock the Artifact of Sacrifice in Risk of Rain Returns.

The Artifact of Sacrifice offers an exciting new approach to RoR Returns as you no longer depend on chests for your items. If this sounds interesting to you, here’s how to unlock the Artifact of Sacrifice in Risk of Rain Returns.

Unlike other Artifacts, Sacrifice isn’t necessarily found in a hidden corner by itself. It requires maneuvering around a level and pressing some buttons to spawn. We’ll take you through a step-by-step process on both locating these buttons and finding the Artifact.

Risk of Rain Returns: How to Unlock the Sacrifice Artifact

The Artifact of Sacrifice makes it so that item chests no longer spawn but monsters have a chance to drop items on death. It’s found in the Magma Barracks which is one of the two possible areas for Level 4. Furthermore, you need to spawn in the right variation of Magma Barracks. You can check if you’re in the right variation if you see any buttons behind walls as you explore and if there’s an artifact gate at the far lower-left of the level. See the picture above for what I’m talking about.

To unlock Sacrifice, you’ll need to press all three buttons located behind visible walls around the level. Technically, any kind of attack will press a button but only those that pass through walls will work like the Huntress’ Cluster Bomb or the Pilot’s Target Acquired for example. Here are the locations of all three buttons:

  • One is located in the top-left corner of the map as you scale some platforms and chains.

  • Another one is located inside a cliffside to the right just before the huge chasm dropping into lava.

  • The final one is located in the center of the map down the first of many consecutive narrow drops into the lava below.

Once you press all three, go back to the artifact gate in the lower-left of the map and the Sacrifice artifact will be waiting for you.

Artifact of Sacrifice Tips

Besides the part where you need to find all the buttons, there’s the question of which attacks will pass through walls. I found that the following work great for pressing buttons but it’s by no means an exhaustive list:

  • The Cremator’s Shots
  • Huntress’ Cluster Bomb
  • Pilot’s Target Acquired
  • The Miner’s Alternative Pick Axe Throw
  • Bandit’s Dynamite
  • Riot Shotgun and Crowd Control
  • HAN-D’s FORCED_REASSEMBLY
  • CHEF’s SEAR
  • Loader’s M440 Conduit
  • Brilliant Behemoth Explosive Attacks (Item)
  • Gold-plated Bomb (Item)

As for gameplay tips with the artifact activated, I’ve had great success with staying in a map longer to farm items and using my gold for EXP. Of course, you shouldn’t do this on every map if you’re aiming for Providence as the difficulty ramps up. However, if you’re looping, then Sacrifice works wonders as you don’t care about the time limit as much. Moreover, you can combine this artifact with the 56 Leaf Clover allowing Elites to have two separate chances to drop items.
